Text: Spielgoval Western Civilization vol.2 GET THE CHEAPEST VERSION YOU CAN.

Course Outline: This course examines the political, economic and cultural history of Europe from 1500 to the present.

This course is transferable to many four year institutions including WMU; accordingly, expectations are set at a university level.

Purpose: Beyond a general factual knowledge of European history, students should come away from the course with an appreciation of the richness and diversity of the Western heritage and the impact of that heritage on the rest of the world.

Attendance: Students are expected to attend all scheduled class meetings. Students who maintain an attendance record with two or fewer absences will receive an extra three percentage points towards their final grade. Students will loose two percentage points per missed class after exceeding three absences.

Requirements

Quizzes: There will be six semi-unannounced quizzes. These will be of a true-false, fill in the blank and multiple choice format. Quizzes take approximately three minutes. After the two lowest grades have been dropped, the other four will be averaged into the "quiz average".

Blue Book Exams: There will be three "blue book exams" which will be a combination of multiple choice and essay:

Multiple choice 40% optional

Extended identification 40% or 80% mandatory

Extended essay 20% mandatory

Final Exam: On the last day of class there will be a non-cumulative final which will be all objective. THE LAST DAY OF CLASS IS MAY 8.

Topics for the exams will be selected by the instructor from class notes and chapter readings; of the two, the lecture material is far more important. Students are expected to bring blue books and PENS on exam days.

THE INSTRUCTOR IS UNDER NO OBLIGATION TO GRANT MAKE-UPS IF AN EXAM IS MISSED. STUDENTS WHO MISS MORE THAN TWO QUIZZES OR ANY OF THE FOUR EXAMS DO SO AT THEIR OWN RISK. STUDENTS ARE OBLIGATED TO CONTACT THE INSTRUCTOR WITH IN FORTY EIGHT HOURS OF A MISSED EXAM. IF A STUDENT IS GRANTED A MAKE-UP EXAM, WRITTEN DOCUMENTATION WILL BE REQUIRED AND THE MAKE –UP WILL BE SIGNIFIGANTLY MORE DIFFICULT THAN THE ORIGINAL.

If a student or group of students is having trouble they are strongly encouraged to come in for tutoring. Some students have found this useful. NEVER BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP.

Academic honesty – please see the Student Handbook and use common sense

The Final Grade: The final grade will represent the average of the for exams and the "quiz average." Except for the two lowest quiz grades all other grades will count.. Extra credit may be gained by attendance points and teamwork in the War between the Blue and the Gray.
