PHY221
Thermal Properties of Materials

_______________

Overview

Purpose
In this module we examine the effect that addition or subtraction of thermal energy has on the temperature and some of the physical properties of a material. We need to know about thermal expansion, for example, so the filings of your teeth expand and contract at the same rate as your tooth. You do not want your tooth bursting at high temperatures (hot bowl of soup) or falling out at cold temperatures (iced tea). Another item for this lesson is the result of mixing substances of different temperatures--conservation of energy again. We finish with change of phase....the background physics of air conditionors and heat pumps!

Prerequisites
o Completion of quiz 7 (70% or better)

_______________
