Typical hours of outside study vary but the student should plan on 10-12 hours per week-minimum
(double this for an eight week session!)
Recommended - a graphing or scientific calculator and portable computer "memory stick"

Any unauthorized use of materials on any exam, test, quiz, or other assignment
(*plagiarism) may result in a zero for the activity and/or the course. The rule
applies to any student supplying unauthorized materials. Also....
see the student

*plagiarism is defined as three or more significant words in a row that are alike.

IV. GRADING CRITERIA

This will be a lecture/demonstration/discussion type class with a laboratory. There will be 3 or 4 lecture tests, class/computer/homework assignments, and a final exam. They will be paper and pencil objective, short answer, and problem solving tests with an emphasis on problem solving. The tests will cover material in the text, the lab, homework assignments, and material presented in lecture.

There will be approximately 10 lab exercises to perform. A record of each lab exercise will be
maintained by the student and a written lab report will be required for selected lab units.

The lecture will count approximately 70% of the course grade and the lab 30%. The

grade scale:

90.0-100%                                4.0
85.0-89.9                                  3.5
80.0-84.0                                  3.0
75.0-79.9                                  2.5
70.0-74.9                                  2.0
65.0-69.9                                  1.5
60.0-64.9                                  1.0
below 60.0                                0.0

A failing grade in lab may result in a 0.0 or an incomplete at the discretion of the instructor.
The student is expected to attend and be prepared for all laboratory/lecture sessions and
exams. The student is responsible for contacting the instructor in the event of any absence
because of illness or emergency.

THERE IS A 14% PENALTY PER WEEK FOR ANY MATERIALS HANDED IN LATE!

Testing conditions:

  • for in-class exams you may use a calculator
  • for the final exam you may use a calculator and a 4" x 6" card of notes or two 3"x5" cards
  • for the lab test - calculator (only a basic scientific allowed), no notes.

V. CLASS GOALS:

-The student will be able to independently and clearly communicate
physical concepts and processes

-The student will be able to independently use the concepts, language,
and processes of physics in a variety of situations.

- The student will be able to independently use problem solving
techniques to form and solve physics problems.

- The student will be able to independently interpret, evaluate,
and communicate problem solutions.

- The student will be able to independently create generalizations
from observed patterns and to develop specific examples from general principles

-The student will be able to demonstrate a knowledge of the philosophy of science  and the principles that are basic to scientific inquiry and research
