OBJECTIVES CHAPTER EIGHT

When you have finished studying chapter eight you should be able to:

*8.1

define and write the  equation for torque
given a pivot point or axis of  rotation find and sketch (free-body) the lever arm
given a pivot point or axis of rotation calculate the lever arm and torque of a force
identify the direction of a torque in 2 and 3 dimension
calculate the net torque on a given object

*8.2 and 8.4

state and explain the first and second conditions for static and dynamic equilibrium
using appropriate free-body diagrams and labels apply the first and second condition for equilibrium to solve a variety of equilibrium problems

*8.5

define and explain the concept of moment of inertia
calculate the moment of inertia for discrete masses
to apply the concept of moment of inertia to rotating objects
state and apply Newton's second law for rotation
state and apply the "Big Five" equations of motion for rotation
state and apply equation for rotational Kinetic energy
state and apply equation for angular momentum
identify and sketch (using appropriate notation) the direction of torque, angular momentum, angular velocity, and angular acceleration.
solve kinematic/dynamic problems involving rotation--Big Five, conservation of energy, conservation of momentum,..
see the example problems in the text, practice quiz, and in-class quiz for some examples
