The laboratory final will be over the following labs:

  • Measurement
  • Graphical analysis of data
  • Position Vectors
  • Acceleration due to the force of gravity

The student should be able to;

  • Make measurements
    • to within 0.005 mm with the micrometer
    • to within 0.002 cm with the vernier caliper
    • to within 0.5 mm with the meter stick
    • to within 0.05 g with the triple beam balance
  • Use significant figures
    • identify the number of significant figures
    • use the correct number of significant figures
    • perform calculations and maintain the correct number of significant figures
  • Graphical analysis
    • From data make an appropriate graph using excel
    • Use graphical analysis techniques to analyze data, obtaining a functional relationship between variables use the "linear" form for straight line   y = mx + b
    • Make appropriate letter substitutions for x and y variables
  • Position Vectors
    • Draw a position vector given the (x,y) coordinates
    • Add two position vectors graphically (to scale)
    • Subtract two position vectors graphically (to scale)
    • Using the lab coordinate system identify your location
  • Acceleration due to the force of gravity
    • Write an appropriate hypothesis
    • Use experimental data to test a hypothesis
    • Calculate percent error
    • Determine 'g' by graphical analysis
    • Using a computer and software obtain a graph of velocity vs time for a 'picket fence' dropped through a photo gate
