Chemistry 130 CHM 100 Prelab  | Titrations  |  Introduction

A technique called titration is often used to determining the concentration of ions in solution.  Acid-base reactions are often analyzed using this technique.  For this experiment, the base is dispensed into the acid via a buret while the acid is pre-measured using a pipett.  Completion of the reaction is indicated by a pink color change in the solution.  The molarity of the base and the volumes of the base and acid are known; the molarity of the acid is then calculated from this information.
