INTRODUCTION

This laboratory exercise consists of two parts: Investigating Chemical Nomenclature and Investigating Acids.

PART 1: INVESTIGATING CHEMICAL NOMENCLATURE

Chemistry involves thousands of elements and compounds; all of which chemists must know by names and formulas.  It is nearly impossible for anyone to memorize the names and formulas of each and every substance.  As a result, scientists know the names and formulas of substances by learning the system used in developing these names; the CHEMICAL NOMENCLATURE SYSTEM.

The chemical nomenclature system involves 2 parts:

  1. WRITE THE NAME of a substance given its chemical formula
  2. WRITE THE FORMULA of a substance given its chemical name

The chemical nomenclature system can be organized based upon the SUBSTANCE (COMPOUND) TYPE:

MOLECULAR (COVALENT)

IONIC

ACID

Once the substance type is identified, each process has a series of steps to follow in order to accomplish the goal of either chemical name or formula.
